Farmer post 1
Mr. Timmermeister owns a farm outside Seattle in a small town name Vashon. He describes his obsession with natural scenes and diary life since he was, the place where he dreams of when he was a little boy. Running a restaurant in downtown, he explains why he loses interests in foods—the details of making food from the restaurant makes he feel sick. I believe that might be a justified reason why he wants to pursue a countryside, farmer’s life.
I have two major feeling when reading his articles. Firstly, he must be really perceptual not rational. We can see it from the fact he gave up buying that well-equipped diary far from Vashon and also from a lot of his initial imagination toward the future of his farm. I can feel his joyfulness when he tries to portray the picture of the farm and what he has done. He really likes what he is doing. I admire him for giving up stable money resources and choosing another different career path. He can also treat things in a different perspective. He said,“ a local farmers’ market is really no different than the New York Exchange or a large suburban mall.” People want to get maximum payback with minimum cost, a lot of similar rules apply to both urban society and farmers life too.
But, from his description with beekeeping and sheep, I find that sometimes I can’t understand him.Besides those overwhelming details actually won't attract readers more, his style of storytelling sometimes makes me uncomfortable. For example, his cruelty to those bees. He at least satisfied over ten thousand bees’ life to gain such skills to make a beehive. From his description, I don’t feel his so-called “love” of bees, but contempt. He likes to watch those little creatures to do exactly the thing he expects to do and overseeing them striving for honey that has been taken away every day. And also his love for lamb. He said lamb is an endearing animal. But the next sentence is about how they become his dinner and their meat textures. I become understand his reasons behinds those act when he talks about growing apple true. When he found out that deer ate all his new trees leaves, he said:” nature is cruel, it is neither fair nor equitable, the beers won't treat you well only because you are a kind farmer.” Even though lamb is cute, bees are hardworking, we still want honey, we still think lamb is the most delicious meat for BBQ.
